Pilates is a system of low-impact, controlled and repetitive exercises designed to improve physical strength, flexibility and posture. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century, its series of precise, slow movements emphasise core strength and coordinated breathing. While perhaps best known for its effectiveness in treating lower back pain, Pilates is used by people of all ages and levels of ability to improve fitness and to provide post-injury rehabilitation.
